Employee Spotlight – Rick Pettigrew, AQUA Pantry Cook, giving back to his community

It’s January, the month when we rebound from the gluttony of the holidays, and work to shed the pounds of too many cookies nibbled, and high-calorie, but oh-so-good egg nogs quaffed.  It’s also a time when we scale back the pocketbook due to our holiday spending hangover.  Sadly, there are many who struggle to put food on the table for their families every day, or even a warm place to rest their head at night.

AQUA by El Gaucho’s Rick Pettigrew volunteers his time at Food Connection in Tacoma

Rick Pettigrew, who works in the kitchen at AQUA by El Gaucho, knows that scenario all too well, as he grew up in a similar manner.  That is one reason he donates his time to Food Connection in Tacoma, the largest food bank in Pierce County.  In addition to the Food Connection’s 127,000 clients they help feed (2011 numbers and, unfortunately, growing), the organization has other programs for feeding needy families and children: The Springbrook Mobile Food Bank serves those who lack transportation to get food; the Backpack Program, delivers over 450 backpacks to needy students every Friday to ensure they have meals for two full days; and the Summer Meal Program, which serves low income children who qualify for free and reduced meals in Washington State during the school year.  In the summer of 2012, 33,806 lunches and 30,179 snacks were served.

Rick donates his time whenever he is able, by helping with whatever needs there are, such as stocking and sorting.  Rick is happy to give back, and says it “reaffirms that I don’t want anyone to live like that.”

In addition to volunteering at the food bank, Rick also gives free guitar lessons to the youth in his community.  In his spare time, he plays guitar, drums, kick-boxes, and enjoys working out.

Rick, who joined the AQUA team in July 2012, loves the continual learning on the job, and appreciates that his hard work is commended.

It goes without saying, that his volunteer efforts at Food Connection Food Bank should be commended as well.  Thank you, Rick, for your commitment to giving back to your community.  We are honored to have people like you on our team.

One of the pillars our company was built upon is “Building a Strong Community.”  We strongly feel that each of us has a certain obligation to help make our world a better place, and each of our restaurant employees are given the opportunity to donate time, energy, and resources to various local organizations needing assistance.  We love highlighting some of our incredible employees and the organizations with which they are working.
